Decolonizing Mental Health: Culture as Generational Medicine

The event "Decolonizing Mental Health: Culture as Medicine" promises to be a transformative experience that explores the intersection of mental health, cultural heritage, and social justice. Featuring a keynote address by Dr. Jennifer Mullan, a revolutionary figure in the mental health industry, the event will delve deep into the roots of global and generational trauma. Dr. Mullan, the founder of Decolonizing Therapy®, has dedicated her career to integrating political, ancestral, therapeutic, and global well-being. Her influential work, showcased on her popular Instagram account @decolonizingtherapy, has earned her accolades such as Essence magazine’s 2020 Essential Hero Award in the category of mental health. Dr. Mullan's national bestseller, “Decolonizing Therapy: Oppression, Historical Trauma & Politicizing Your Practice,” continues to inspire and mobilize a community-driven movement towards decolonized mental health practices.

In addition to Dr. Mullan's keynote, the event will feature Dr. Monique Swift, a dedicated advocate for racial social justice and a pivotal figure in addressing racial trauma and inequality. Dr. Swift’s extensive volunteer work focuses on benefiting the Black community and other oppressed and underserved populations. Her grassroots and civic organizing efforts emphasize personal and community empowerment, addressing racial inequality head-on.

The event will also include a compelling panel discussion titled "Culture as Generational Medicine: Addressing the Challenges," featuring esteemed professionals such as Hazeline Pilgrim, LCSW, Executive Director of Essex County Family Support Organization; Dr. Jesselly De La Cruz, Executive Director of the Latino Action Network; and David Armstrong, Certified Facilitator for the National Fatherhood Initiative. This panel will explore the critical role of culture in healing generational trauma and fostering community resilience.
