This Week’s Highlight: Jihobanna Marina Navarro García, Hispanic Family Center.

My name is Jihobanna Marina Navarro García. I am 44 years old, Nicaraguan, a lawyer, and a notary. I have two children, a 24-year-old son and an 18-year-old daughter. I emigrated to the United States on February 13, 2022, and arrived in Camden, New Jersey, on February 22 of that same year.

The reason for my emigration was the difficult sociopolitical situation my country had been facing since April 18, 2018. At that time, many professionals, including lawyers, were facing repression for not supporting the government. Due to this situation and the fact that I was unemployed, I made the difficult decision to emigrate in search of safety and new opportunities.

Upon arriving in this country, I began looking for work. After several days and weeks, I managed to find a job on June 17 in the laundry department of a hospital. Although it was not a job related to my profession, I accepted it because I needed to start over and get ahead. During that time, I met someone who was also a legal professional in their home country. While talking about our experiences as immigrants, they told me about a center in Camden called the Hispanic Family Center, where they provide support to Hispanic women through classes, counseling, and job training programs.

Before emigrating, I worked as a legal advisor at a financial institution in my home country. However, when I arrived in the United States, I had to start from the bottom and adapt to a new reality. Motivated by that conversation, I decided to visit the center to learn more about its programs.

At the Hispanic Family Center, I received a lot of support. I participated in several workshops and was able to apply for the Home Health Aide course, which provides training in caring for the elderly. Thanks to this opportunity, I was able to acquire new skills to improve my job prospects.

In addition, I had to leave my job at the laundry after suffering an injury to my left shoulder due to repetitive movements and constant physical exertion over more than two years. At that time, the support I received was crucial in helping me continue to seek new opportunities.

I am very grateful to the Hispanic Family Center for the support, guidance, and opportunities they provided me, as they have been a great help in my process of adapting and growing in this country.

El Empoderamiento en Acción: Convertir los Retos en Nuevos Caminos

Mi nombre es Jihobanna Marina Navarro García. Tengo 44 años, soy nicaragüense, abogada y notaria. Tengo dos hijos, uno de 24 años y una de 18 años. Emigré a los Estados Unidos el 13 de febrero de 2022 y llegué a Camden, New Jersey, el 22 de febrero del mismo año.

El motivo de mi emigración fue la difícil situación sociopolítica que atravesaba mi país desde el 18 de abril de 2018. En ese tiempo, muchos profesionales, incluyendo abogados, enfrentábamos represiones por no apoyar al gobierno. Debido a esta situación y a que me encontraba desempleada, tomé la difícil decisión de emigrar en busca de seguridad y nuevas oportunidades.

Al llegar a este país comencé la búsqueda de empleo. Después de varios días y semanas, logré conseguir trabajo el 17 de junio en el área de lavandería de un hospital. Aunque no era un trabajo relacionado con mi profesión, lo acepté porque necesitaba empezar de nuevo y salir adelante.

Durante ese tiempo conocí a una persona que también era profesional del derecho en su país. Conversando sobre nuestras experiencias como inmigrantes, me habló de un centro en Camden llamado Hispanic Family Center, donde brindan apoyo a mujeres hispanas a través de clases, orientación y programas de capacitación laboral.

Antes de emigrar, yo trabajaba como asesora legal en una institución financiera en mi país. Sin embargo, al llegar a Estados Unidos tuve que comenzar desde abajo y adaptarme a una nueva realidad. Motivada por esa conversación, decidí acercarme al centro para conocer más sobre sus programas.

En Hispanic Family Center recibí mucho apoyo. Participé en varias charlas y pude aplicar al curso de Home Health Aide, que ofrece capacitación para el cuidado de personas de la tercera edad. Gracias a esta oportunidad pude adquirir nuevas herramientas para mejorar mis oportunidades laborales.

Además, tuve que dejar mi trabajo en la lavandería después de sufrir una lesión en el hombro izquierdo debido a los movimientos repetitivos y al esfuerzo físico constante durante más de dos años. En ese momento, el apoyo recibido fue muy importante para continuar buscando nuevas oportunidades.

Estoy muy agradecida con Hispanic Family Center por el apoyo, la orientación y las oportunidades que me brindaron, ya que han sido de gran ayuda en mi proceso de adaptación y crecimiento en este país.
